Fort Leavenworth gate closed after suspicious package found

? The main gate at Fort Leavenworth was closed for about 90 minutes Thursday while security teams investigated a suspicious package inside a sport utility vehicle.

A Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman says the package was noticed around 10:30 a.m. during a routine check of vehicles trying to enter the post.

Traffic was diverted to two other gates. The main gate was reopened before noon.

No other details were available, but the closure of the gate was deemed a precaution. The incident was being investigated.

The northeast Kansas post is home to the Army’s Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and numerous education and training centers.
