25 years ago: 3 firefighters suspended without pay after arrests

Three Lawrence firefighters were suspended without pay while city officials investigated their arrests on charges of possession of controlled substances. The three had been arrested by two officers on routine patrol outside a private club at 806 W. 24th Street.

About 100 teachers from elementary schools operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs gathered at Haskell Indian Junior College for a two-week conference. The focus during the first week was on science instruction, and the second week would emphasize the teaching of mathematics. Some of the conference participants had traveled as far as 1,600 miles to attend.

Lawrence homeowners were facing a possible raise in property taxes of about $8.94 for every $1,000 in assessed property.
