Lawrence seeks $150,000 grant for energy audit

July 21, 2010

The city will vie for a $150,000 grant aimed at finding energy savings.

Commissioners agreed to submit an application to the Environmental Protection Agency for a grant that would pay for an energy audit of some of the city’s more complex systems, such as the series of pumps and devices used in the city’s water and sewer plants.

If the city wins the grant, it will be required to provide $75,000 in matching funds.

Huge energy saving tip, for free: scrap the T. End the practice of driving massive empty buses in circles round and round the city, wasting barrells of oil every day.

I've got an idea, replace Lawrence's coal-fired power plant which is among the most inefficient in the nation with basically any modern power plant. Boom, $150K saved, city of Lawrence you can thank me later.

I'll never cease to be amazed by this city's love of endless studies and audits, and then the inaction that usually follows.

Is this part of the recently created 'sustainability co-coordinator' between Douglas and Franklin Counties? It's tough to take these people seriously when here in Ottawa, there is a pallet company that has sawdust, wood scraps they'd love to use up/ get rid of. True, a conveyor magnet and grinder would use energy but no one even seems interested in it- even at free. IMHO- they (our officials) are just kidding us-with PC speak, but for people needing sawdust for horses, oil-soak, whatever- it is available. It's in Ottawa, just a short piece down a dirt road thats by the fairly pointless 'Tourist Center' on 68 Hwy- the help is there most business days, 10-3 generally, and are quite friendly. If our 'leaders' are overlooking this potential- maybe we simply need new leaders.

"The city will vie for a $150,000 grant aimed at finding energy savings. " Are there swimsuit and talent categories in the competition?
