25 years ago: Merchants ready early for 9 a.m. Sidewalk Sale start

The annual Sidewalk Sale was underway and business was expected to be brisk throughout the day. Although the sale was not scheduled to begin until 9 a.m., many merchants had set up their sale tables earlier to beat the July heat.

A year-old plan to construct an addition to Lawrence Memorial Hospital was put on hold when bids for the project came in at least $240,000 over the budgeted amount. The two-story addition on the west side of the hospital was planned to include an ambulatory surgical center and an educational facility.

The 39 Kansas men who were still listed as POWs or MIA from the Vietnam War were to be remembered at an upcoming ceremony at Post 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The list of men would be fewer by one than last year’s, as the body of an Overland Park man had been returned, according to the VFW commander.

Two new ambulances were a welcome addition to the Douglas County Ambulance Service. The new vehicles, which could carry three patients each, came at a cost of $48,000 apiece.
