First responders get bearings at bio lab

? Ten emergency responders have gotten their first look at Kansas State’s Biosecurity Research Institute.

The paramedics and firefighters would be the first called to the scene if there were an emergency in the research lab. On Thursday they were shown the obstacles they would face if called to the facility, the Manhattan Mercury reported.

The institute is a Biosecurity Level 3 facility, which means researchers work with agents that can be transmitted through the air and could be lethal.

That means the responders must take precautions they don’t face in other situations. Thursday’s tour was intended to show participants what they would have to do once inside of the institute.

Officials say the only emergency at the facility in its two years of existence was a heat exhaustion case last summer.
