40 years ago: Douglas County one of its own delinquent taxpayers

Gov. Robert Docking announced that more than $10 million in state funds for highway construction were to be allocated in the fiscal 1971 budget for projects on K-10, U.S. 59 South and U.S. 24. The largest project was to be a four-lane divided highway beginning at 23rd Street and running south three and a half miles. Funding was also to go to a portion of the K-10 project. As part of a long-range plan, K-10 was planned eventually to run from Lawrence into Kansas City and connect to Kansas City International Airport. The U.S. 59 project was envisioned to ultimately connect Lawrence to Interstate 35 south of Ottawa.

Douglas County turned out to be one of its own delinquent taxpayers, according to officials. 2.3 parcels of land between New Hampshire and Rhode Island and between 11th and 12th Streets had been condemned the previous fall by the county for its building program, and the county had to pay the prorated taxes for December and part of November, amounting to $469.43.
