40 years ago: Most northeast Kansas roadways in need of improvement

A map issued by the State Highway Department showing the “sufficiency ratings” of Kansas roadways showed most of the northeast Kansas roadways as solid black — the designation given to the below-60 rating meaning “improvement of the road is necessary.” The chief state highway engineer attributed the decline to “a combination of mileage, traffic and terrain.” State highway K-10, Lawrence to Eudora, received a rating of 37, and U.S. Highway 40 from the Shawnee County line to Lawrence was rated 28.

KU’s director of intercollegiate athletics Wade Stinson was on record as suggesting that any decision to cut the amount of activity fees to the athletic department ought to be made by student referendum. Stinson said that it was probable that ticket costs would go up for students, or programs would be cut, if funds were decreased.

A baby robin was a frequent guest at the home of Arnold Weiss and family at 3008 Steven Drive. After rescuing the bird from the family cat, Weiss had released it into the wild, but it had since been returning for meals, possibly because the raw hamburger on the menu was preferable to the worms which were normal robin fare.
