100 years ago: Physicians to take on ministers at the ballpark

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 14, 1910: “Although Lawrence gained 111 in population during the last year, its school census shows a decrease in school population of 26. The total number of children of school age is 3,185. While the white children have decreased 67 in number over the preceding year, the ranks of the colored children show an increase of 37…. The World was phoned today that the physicians and ministers were going to neglect patients and pastoral calls, and settle the question of their base ball supremacy on the diamond. To this extent has the base ball epidemic spread. The saw-bones admit they haven’t much of a team, but they are confident of being able to chase the mollycoddle pastors back to the tall grass and their mid-week prayer meets. The pulpit ornaments have an equal contempt for the athletic professions of the pill-rollers…. A record catch was made in the Kaw this morning when a monster catfish weighing 75 pounds was hooked, just below the dam. It required the united efforts of half a dozen to tire the big fellow out and finally land him. He was of the channel cat variety, and measured just a trifle short of five feet.”
