Lawrence Cactus thumped by Andrew County Kings, 16-4

? The Lawrence Cactus had one good inning.

The Andrew County Kings had a couple, and the Kings cruised to a 16-4 rout of the Cactus on Sunday in the Kansas State Showcase youth baseball tournament.

The Cactus jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Kings rallied with two in the bottom and nine in the bottom of the second.

“Hopefully today was a learning day and not just a trip out behind the wood shed,” Cactus coach Wilson Kilmer said. “The Kings are a very good team, and that is not the first time they have done that to someone this summer.

“We need to learn that it is much more important about how to command our pitches than it is throw all out. Our defense had a couple of chances to step up and make a tough play for our pitchers, and we didn’t do that early.”

Preston Schenck was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Colin Toalson, Tim Lewis and Tanner Kilmer each had a hit.

Lawrence (16-6) will play host to the Topeka Golden Giants at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Ice Field.
