25 years ago: Local business helps preschool program

July 11, 2010

After the appearance of an earlier story in the Journal-World (see OHT for June 30, 1985) explaining the financial problems of Children’s Hour, a local preschool program, a Lawrence business stepped up to help. Everley Roofing and Heating fixed the building’s leaky roof for free, which helped “tremendously,” according to an agency official.

An Overland Park man reported that he was robbed at gunpoint at about 11 p.m. at the Douglas County Bank on west 23rd Street. The man had been withdrawing money from the lobby ATM when someone approached from behind, showed him a handgun, and used the man’s card to withdraw an additional $160. The robber then took the man’s car keys to make his escape. Police found the man’s car nearby but were still searching for the robber.

Forty bicycle riders were encountering steamy weather in Kansas and elsewhere, they reported as they traveled through town as part of a coast-to-coast “Cyclists Fighting Hunger” ride.
