Food bank to start giving fresh produce

A Lawrence food bank began offering a Mobile Food Pantry distribution this year.

Just Food of ECKAN receives a truckload of fresh food from Harvesters Community Food Network, of Kansas City, Mo., on the second Monday of each month. The next distribution is Monday.

The distribution begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. or when the food runs out. It takes place in the food bank’s parking lot, 1200 E. 11th St.

Carolyn Ward, director of planning for ECKAN, said food bank workers never know what kind of food they are receiving in advance, but it is perishable food that is just beginning to ripen.

There is no income requirement to receive food, but recipients must reside in Douglas County.

Last month, the distribution served about 250 families.

Ward said food donations decrease in the summer, just when they are needed most.

“Demand is high in the summer because children are home from school and people’s food budgets are stretched,” she said. “It is a busy time for food pantries.”
