25 years ago: Local residents oppose bypass project

Local residents opposed to the proposed bypass project attended a meeting of the Douglas County Commission, where they presented a petition bearing 132 signatures of people against the plan. They said that the project constituted a potential threat to the environment as well as a “smokescreen” that would use public money to benefit private developers. Commissioners insisted that the exact route for the bypass had not yet been determined and that the project was not intended to benefit financially any private individuals.

City commissioners approved a site plan for a former 7-Eleven store at 3025 W. Sixth to be converted into a Scotch Fabric Care dry-cleaning business. The vote was split because some commissioners were concerned about the proposed drive-through lane.

City commissioners also approved a resolution of intent to issue $950,000 in industrial revenue bonds to Hall-Kimbrell Services Inc., an environmental engineering firm.
