Board of Education plans to discuss state budget issues

? The Kansas State Board of Education plans to discuss budget issues next week.

Board members have scheduled a discussion Tuesday afternoon of spending proposals for the fiscal year that begins in July 2011.

The Department of Education’s current budget is about $3.7 billion, mostly for aid to local school districts. Education groups are likely to push the board to recommend increases in that aid.

A group representing 72 Kansas districts has notified the Legislature it intends to sue state officials in October over education funding.

The Board of Education’s proposals will go to the governor’s staff for review. The governor will submit his own proposed budget to legislators in January.
