Cactus edged by Emporia in tournament finals

? Lawrence’s Cactus lost to Emporia in the Glen Winget Memorial Tournament final, 7-6, on Sunday night after a one-hour rain delay.

The two teams only played four innings because of excessive rain.

“We can’t give up seven runs,” Cactus coach Wilson Kilmer said. “If we take care of business like we should have, it’s (rain) a non-issue. It snow-balled on us in a hurry.”

Emporia went ahead, 7-0, in the third. Lawrence (15-4) came back with four runs before the rain delay, then scored two more after the delay. The rain kept coming, however, and the game was called in the top of the fifth.

In an earlier semifinal game on Sunday, Lawrence defeated Arkansas City, 9-8, in eight innings.

Adam Petz produced the game-winning hit to score Colin Toalson, who after the final was named tournament MVP. Lawrence actually trailed Arkansas City, 7-2, in the third inning.

“I wasn’t a happy camper at that point,” Kilmer said. “I said, ‘Hey, we can roll over right here. We haven’t pitched well, we haven’t ran the bases well, we haven’t hit well. Or you could get back in this game and win this thing.’ We got focused. Instead of putting pressure on ourselves, we applied it more to them.”

Joining Toalson on the all-tournament team were Cactus players Preston Schenck, Tim Lewis and Drew Noble.
