40 years ago: Missing man found after search of river

A 27-year-old Lawrence man was reported missing by friends when he failed to report to work after a solo fishing trip to the Kansas River. Ten hours later, after law enforcement officials had dragged the river for his body, he was found alive, but with blistered feet and a large bump on his head, about 20 miles downstream, walking near the intersection of K-10 and K-7. He could remember having slipped on the edge of the river and he knew he had been walking for some time, but he could not remember his name.

A photo showed local residents Terry Lee and Reece Wiley enjoying “what might be termed ideal jobs” on a hot summer day. They worked in the storage area of the Lawrence Ice Company, where temperatures hovered around 30 degrees.

Local movie theaters were showing a variety of films. The Varsity, the Granada, and the Hillcrest theaters were showing “Paint Your Wagon,” “The Adventurers,” “The Boatniks,” and “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” The Sunset Drive-In was advertising a July 4th marathon of “Westerns, Hot Rods, Gangsters, and Love” along with an air-conditioned snack bar, a playground for the kids, and free coffee at 4:00 a.m.
