40 years ago: Curfew violators sentenced to year of jail

Two men who pleaded guilty to curfew violations during the April disturbances were sentenced to one year in jail. Both men had been attending Kansas University; one had graduated and the other had been scheduled to start his senior year.

Donald L. May, a former Lawrence resident, was struck on the head and knocked unconscious during a robbery at the First State Bank in Lansing, where he serves as executive vice-president. His injuries were not considered serious.

Filings in the Douglas County District Court reached an all-time high during the fiscal year that was drawing to a close. During the year, 823 cases had been filed, and 452 closed through settlement or discharge.

Two buildings in downtown Leavenworth were extensively damaged in fire-bombing incidents. Miller’s Drug Store and Broadway and Shawnee was believed to be the main target. Minutes before that explosion, another blast started a fire eight blocks away. Police believed this to have been a diversionary tactic.
