LAGA City Tournament: The Lawrence Amateur Golf Association’s City Tournament will be contested July 10 at Eagle Bend and July 11 at Alvamar Public. Any golfer who lives or works in Douglas County or plays in a local league or is a member of the city’s two country clubs is eligible to compete. Registration is at Golf USA (832-9009) at 33rd and Iowa. Entry fee of $25, plus greens fees and (optional) cart fees charged by the courses. There are four divisions: Open, Women, Senior, Super Senior. Prizes awarded to top golfers in each flight.
Mass. St. Mile: The Mass Street Mile will be held Sunday in downtown Lawrence. Youth Football Camps: The Lawrence Youth Football Camp for quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs is July 6-8. Sessions will run 9:30-11:30 a.m. Registration forms for the LHS and FSHS camps are at city elementary and junior high schools. Adult Softball and Kickball: The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for adult fall softball and kickball through July 9. For information, call 832-7920 or log on to www.lprd.org.

Cagers baseball: Kansas Cagers Basketball Team is looking for ninth- and 10th-grade boys (2010-2011 school year) who are interested in playing competitive basketball in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas. Practices are held most Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tonganoxie Middle School Gym, 824 Washington Street, Tonganoxie. Campbell Hole in One: Brandon Campbell used a 7-iron for a hole in one on the 116-yard, No. 17 at Eagle Bend on June 26. Dennis Long, Mark Prilliman and Kalyn Fordemwalt witnessed it.
Stewart Hole in One: Tom Stewart used an 8-iron to ace the 145-yard No. 11 at Lawrence Country Club on June 20. Witnesses were Andrew Stewart and Hannah Stewart.
Zylstra Hole in One: Jon Zylstra used a 7-iron to ace No. 11 at Lawrence Country Club, from the 165-yard tee, on June 26. Witnesses were Sean Lester, Jason Seeman and Jay Hepler.
Magnuson Hole in One: Eric Magnuson hit a hole in one on the second hole at Lawrence Country Club, using an 8-iron from 156 yards. Jim Clement, Kit Grove and John Handrigan witnessed the June 28 shot.
Caldwell Standout Swimmer: Lawrence’s Courtney Caldwell, 12, broke three Lawrence Aquahawks records and five meet records at the Clayton Shaw Park 72 swim meet in St. Louis. Her top performance came in the 50 butterfly, where she posted a time that ranks 10th nationally in the USSSA.
Free State Softball Camp: Free State High will host a softball camp for five weeks of Sundays beginning August 22. The camp is for girls in grades 4 through 8. For information, contact FSHS coach Lee Ice at ice@sunflower.com.
Jayhawks Golf Club Results: Mike Hertling, Chris Petr, Bud Stagg and Drew Walters shot 16-under par to win the Jayhawk Golf Club’s Four-Man, Two-Net Ball tournament Saturday at Alvamar Public.
South Football Camp: South Junior High’s football camp will run 8-noon July 19-21 at Haskell Indian Nations University. Camp attendees will be instructed in offensive and defensive fundamentals, position-specific skills and techniques, as well as general football skills and techniques. Phenix Third at State: Lawrence Phenix-Fyler, an 18-under softball team, placed third at the Kansas State ASA tournament in Wichita last weekend. The Phenix went 1-1 in pool play and 2-2 in bracket play for their highest state finish since 2006. For the tournament, Dana Kramer was 11-for-21 with eight runs, two doubles and two triples; Jamie Jarrett was 7-for-18 with five runs, two home runs and a double; Jamie Morgison was 7-for-17 with four runs; Brianna Ploude was 7-for-18 with five runs; Shelley Prost went 2-2 and threw 25 innings; and catcher Kristen Bell was cited for her defensive play. The Phenix moved to 11-7-1 on the season and have qualified for three national tournaments.
