40 years ago: Lawrence man commended for honesty

The Lawrence Jaycees were promising a “really big show” for the annual fireworks display at Memorial Stadium. The project co-chairman had been warned not to damage the new Tartan Turf track, which was extremely expensive and which would burn, or “melt and bubble like an inner tube.” The Jaycees also needed to keep a safe distance from the new scoreboard.

A KU journalism professor visiting Phillipsburg, Kan., used a pay phone at the bus station there. When the phone accidentally regurgitated $3.45 in change, professor Stanley Michelson left the money, with a note, at the telephone office. The manager of the Phillipsburg phone company was impressed at the honesty of the people of Lawrence as represented by Michelson.
