Professor Maynard Shelly, who taught a class on terrorism at Kansas University, spoke about a recent hijacking of a TWA jetliner by Shiite Moslem extremists. Shelly said that the episode, which led to the captivity of 39 American hostages for more than two weeks, was part of a larger problem. “I think the problem of terrorism is going to be with us for at least two or three more decades,” Shelly said. He also said that terrorism was mostly a reaction of the economic “have-nots” who felt hatred and resentment towards the U.S., as well as an “immense hatred” against the U.S. military.

At a meeting of the Traffic Safety Commission, board members were planning to discuss safety concerns for bicycle traffic in Lawrence. Parks and Recreation Director Fred DeVictor said he was working with several representatives of the traffic engineering safety plan to mark bike routes on portions of several city streets.
