40 years ago: Budig gains new title

Kansas University chancellor Gene Budig is to earn a new title — Brig. Gen. Budig, to be exact. He is currently a colonel in the Air National Guard and chief of staff of the Kansas Air National Guard — the only head of a major public university involved with the Air Guard or the Air Force Reserve, officials said.

Northeast Kansas continued to feel more like the Great White North. Heavy winds, blowing snow and bitter cold joined forces to close area schools, but no serious accidents were reported. The KU weather station recorded an overnight low of minus-7 degrees, only 1 degree off the record set in 1918. Wind chill readings were down around 30 below overnight. There had been three inches of new snow, bringing the local cover to 8 inches.

Local officials confirmed that despite rumors about a possible move to Kansas City, the Kansas -Missouri football game would be played in Lawrence the coming fall. Local officials had risen upquickly to oppose such a shift and the effort succeeded quickly.

The Kansas attorney general said he had launched an investigation into the operation of Culture Farms Inc., a new Lawrence company that tested milk-based cultures for use in cosmetics. Some said they smelled a Ponzi scheme.
