100 years ago: Reported murder draws attention to feud

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 31, 1910: What has developed into a feud of two prominent families who live in Leavenworth County near Lawrence has thrown the whole neighborhood east and north of here into a state of great excitement. There is reported to be evidence of one man who is a party to the feud that a murder was committed seven years ago and that an arrest should be made. The victim was Martin Gilmore and nobody yet has paid any penalty. Sheriff Banning says he plans to investigate the matter as soon as possible. . . . The Kansas University freshman track team defeated Lawrence High School’s team 72-41 in a practice meet yesterday. . . . . The Santa Fe is again running between here and Topeka after the flooding and ice dam damage done to the tracks in the Lake View has been repaired. A large force was required to get the work done in the Cameron Bluff locale. . . . Halley’s Comet made its first appearance several evenings ago in the western heavens and can be seen now if you are so fortunate as to have a telescope. In May along with the flowers the comet will be in full bloom.
