Wild overnight incident leads to gunshots, standoff, but peaceful resolution

Investigation into accidents, incident remains ongoing

A man who was involved in two car accidents overnight Friday is the subject of an ongoing investigation after fleeing from police, hiding in a residence and firing multiple gunshots early Saturday.

According to Lawrence Police Capt. Paul Fellers, the man was involved in a two-vehicle accident at 11:18 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Kasold Drive and Trail Road. He continued driving north for a brief time before crashing into a fence in the 100 block of Kasold Drive. The man fled the scene on foot and entered a nearby residence.

When police arrived on scene, the two people already inside the home were able to leave without incident. Police learned the man had firearms inside the house with him. During the course of the interaction with officers, the man fired more than one shot. Fellers said the man did not appear to be shooting at officers and police did not fire any shots during the incident.

Later Saturday morning, neighbors in the area said they did not remember hearing any sounds of gunshots during the night. Dean Gore, who lives next door to the house police were investigating, said there were still two squad cars outside the house about 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Gore’s wife said as many as six law enforcement vehicles had been parked in the street earlier in the morning, including Lawrence Police and a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.

Gore said officers had been standing in his yard observing the neighbors’ house. Gore’s wife asked officers what was going on and was informed the incident was of no concern to her. According to police reports, alcohol was involved in the incident.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Damon Thomas said as of Sunday night police had not made an arrest in connection with the incident and could not provide further information.
