40 years ago: Welfare department moves to new location

The Douglas County Welfare Dept. was moved into new quarters at the former Woodlawn School in the 300 block of Perry Street.

The cost of hospital care here had skyrocketed in a 10-year span. In 1959, the average bill at Lawrence Memorial had been $167. At the end of 1969, the cost had more than doubled to $360. Costs and operating expenses had soared, forcing some changes of administrators. Trustees admitted stressful conditions.

Kansas University chancellor Laurence Chalmers welcomed new students to the campus for the spring semester, declaring that “the door is always open for eager students.”
