100 years ago: Bowersock unlikely to enter governor race

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 30, 1910: The attempt to revive interest in girls’ basketball at the university has not met with success. The girls do not seem interested, they do not come to practice and only two or three of them seem serious about the game. Most say they are too busy with other activities. . . . J.D. Bowersock says his business is growing so rapidly he is not likely to enter the race for governor. He is being urged by many to run but says he may not be able to do so. . . . James Willis Gleed started a fight to abolish football at KU during a meeting yesterday of the university board of regents. He is backed by William Allen White, the Emporia newspaperman. The Gleed family has some slight connection at the Kansas City Journal, which carried quite a story on the opposition. Only four regents were present here and there does not seem to be much of a chance that football will be dropped. In fact, the proposal was voted down by the regents present and the chancellor is with the regents. . . . Somebody is poisoning dogs here. A half-dozen highly valuable animals are among those killed recent by strychnine.
