100 years ago: 3 businessman arrested due to new cigarette law

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 29, 1909: The first warrants for arrests of violators of the new anti-cigarette law have been drawn up and three arrests were made today of well-known local businessmen. But since the new law went into effect it does not appear there has been any decrease in smoking, particularly among minors. If they cannot procure the papers to make their smokes, they secure an older person to do it for them. . . . Kansans everywhere are celebrating Kansas Day to honor the state and its many achievements and outstanding citizens. . . . On account of scarlet fever, four local schools have been closed. There was one death last night, the 13-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis of the Campbell Farm. The incidence of the disease seems to be rising sharply and even more schools may be closed. . . . It seems to be all the style now for students at KU to organize a new fraternity. The groups are not large and may have finance trouble but there is a current trend in that direction.
