Style scout: Geoffrey Benzing

Geoffrey Benzing.

Geoffrey Benzing

Age: 34.
Sign: Aquarius.
Hometown: Wichita.
Time in Lawrence: 7 years.
Occupation: Artist and greenskeeper at Alvamar Country Club.

What were you doing when scouted: On my way to my girlfriend’s house to watch classic bowling on ESPN.

How would you describe your style: Vintage casual. I typically wear thrift-store sports T-shirts and pants (except when I’m on the golf course).

Who are your fashion influences: Mark Gonzales. He is a pro- skate boarder. He invented lots of fashion trends in the early ’80s/late ’90s that still resonate today. I like that he integrates art, sports and fashion in a traditionally much more secluded arena.

What are your favorite fashion trends: I like boots on girls – they seem to say something about their personality and level of confidence. On guys, I like cut-off T-shirts in the summertime. It reminds me of when I was in junior high, and it’s interesting to watch fashion trends come full circle.

What are your least favorite fashion trends: Cut-off jeans on men and women. Also, I don’t like high-top shoes – they are just too oversize.

What would you like to see more of in Lawrence: I want more places to dance. We need venues that draw versatile crowds and broad mixes of people — someplace with the opportunity to showcase the diversity of fashion styles in our city.

What would you like to see less of in Lawrence: In the world of golf, I want to see fewer giant belt buckles on men. The business of golf fashion and attire is a huge entity on its own; although I don’t mind some of the clothing worn on the green, the huge belt buckles look out of place.

People say I look like: You know, nobody ever says that I look like anyone else – no one famous at least. Every once and a while someone might comment that I look like another guy they know but not any one person in particular.

Tell us a secret: In high school, my grandma made most of my clothing. We would pick out the fabric together, creating patterns out of clothing that I already owned. She was my personal tailor – I had a customized wardrobe.
