25 years ago: Police beefing up drunk driving tests

University Council members concurred with an earlier committee recommendation that radiation biophysics be discontinued in Kansas University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences but be revitalized nd established in another segment of the university format. The council voted 21-7 with three abstentions.

Lawrence High staff members were looking at ways to avoid loss of time in class by teachers tied up with supervising extracurricular activities. Emphasis was on the “cost in time” away from the classroom due to coaching, advising and such.

The Lawrence Police Department was beefing up its arsenal of tests to detect drunk drivers. New equipment and procedures were being worked into the schedule.

Weary union negotiators announced that a tentative agreement which “basically met our proposals” was reached between Yale University and its 1,000 blue-collar workers. There had been the prospect of a crippling strike at the school.
