Senate panel endorses removing limits on number of small claims lawsuits that can be filed each year

? A Senate committee has endorsed a bill that would allow Kansans to file an unlimited number of cases in small-claims court.

The bill cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday after little discussion.

The measure would remove the cap on the number of cases that individuals or businesses could file in small-claims court. Currently the limit is no more than 20 cases in the same county during the same calendar year.

Supporters testified that the 20-case limit hurts small businesses’ ability to recover payment for goods and services.

The bill was sponsored by 11 Republican senators.
