McPherson ? The Free State High boys basketball team salvaged its trip to the McPherson Invitational with a 54-50 victory against Buhler in the seventh-place game Saturday.

Free State led by eight after one quarter and 12 at halftime but had that lead trimmed to six midway through the fourth quarter. The Firebirds kept their poise down the stretch and held on for the four-point victory.

Senior Josh May led the Firebirds’ attack with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Free State (5-6) finished 1-2 at the tournament.

The Firebirds will travel Friday to Olathe East.
