Lawrence man arrested after gun incident, vehicle accident

A 25-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Sunday morning after an incident involving a shotgun and a vehicle accident.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, about 2:11 a.m. officers were driving through the parking lot at the Phoggy Dog, 2228 Iowa St., when they were flagged down in reference to an incident with a weapon. Bordman said three men, a 23-year-old Lawrence man, a 23-year-old KU student and a Eudora man, told officers they had witnessed the occupants of a Chevy pickup truck point a shotgun at them.

Officers began searching the parking lot for the vehicle immediately and located it as it began to leave the area. Police turned to head south on Iowa Street in the direction of the vehicle when the truck fishtailed and struck a utility pole beyond the curb on the west side of the street. Bordman said the accident rendered the vehicle immobile.

Due to the initial report that weapons were in the vehicle, officers initiated a felony car stop, which involves approaching with guns drawn. All three of the vehicles occupants were secured without incident. Bordman said a weapon was recovered from the vehicle.

The driver of the truck was treated at the scene for a laceration to his hand. He was then arrested for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and aggravated assault stemming from the parking lot incident. The other two occupants were questioned an released.
