Hartford, Conn. ? Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun took a medical leave Tuesday for an undisclosed condition, the latest health concern for the 67-year-old Hall of Famer.

The school did not provide additional details. Calhoun had prostate cancer in 2003 and skin cancer twice, most recently in 2008.

Dr. Peter Schulman, the coach’s primary-care physician, said in a statement he advised Calhoun to take time off “to address some temporary medical issues, none of which involve any previous medical conditions that he has dealt with.”

Associate head coach George Blaney will run the Huskies in Calhoun’s absence. UConn is 11-6 and fell out of the Top 25 this week after losing three straight games.

Cyclones’ Staiger leaving

Des Moines, Iowa — Iowa State guard Lucca Staiger stunned the Cyclones on Tuesday by announcing plans to leave the program and pursue professional opportunities in his native Germany. Staiger, a junior, started all 17 games this season. He is averaging 9.4 points and shooting 42.5 percent from three-point range in his second year with the Cyclones.

Bills name Gailey coach

Orchard Park, N.Y. — Chan Gailey was hired by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, getting a second chance to prove himself as an NFL coach and inheriting a team that has missed the playoffs for 10 straight years. Gailey was introduced by general manager Buddy Nix at a news conference which ended a two-month search to replace Dick Jauron, who was fired in November.

Royals sign Gordon, Tejeda

Kansas City, Mo. — Third baseman Alex Gordon and right-hander Robinson Tejeda have signed one-year contracts with the Kansas City Royals and avoided arbitration. Gordon was the second overall pick of the 2005 draft and once thought of as the cornerstone of the team’s future. But the 25-year-old’s career has been slow to develop, and he missed 79 games last season after undergoing hip surgery. He wound up batting .232 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 49 games.

Clijsters advances

Melbourne, Australia — U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters remained on course for her second straight Grand Slam singles title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tamarine Tanasugarn on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
