100 year ago: Ice jam causing power problems

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 20, 1910: “Officials continue to study the ice jam on the Kaw River that has caused so many power problems here and they are considering ways to ‘clean’ the river so we have no more such emergencies. Santa Fe engineers are among those surveying the matter. … Kansas sheriffs are petitioning the state to allow them more money for the meals they have to feed prisoners. They say current outlays of 50 cents a day should be raised to 60 or even 70 cents.”
