Style scout: Wiley Sharp

Wiley Sharp, University of Tulane Graduate Student in Classical Studies.

Wiley Sharp

Age: 22
Sign: Virgo
Hometown: Minnetonka, Minn.
Time in Lawrence: One week.
Occupation: University of Tulane Graduate Student in Classical Studies.

What were you doing when scouted: On my way to run errands and pick up breakfast.

How would you describe your style? The “classier side of casual.” I don’t necessarily follow trends, but I do purposefully choose basic pieces that will always be in style.

Favorite fashion trends: Currently, I’m focused on classic outerwear. I am looking for a good coat, like a peacoat — namely because it is functional and timeless, the perfect addition to my lifetime wardrobe.

Least favorite fashion trends: Right now, there seems to be a fashion movement that calls for an “ultra dirty” look. Past grungy, “ultra dirty’ is achieved with unwashed hair, disheveled layers and leftover eyeliner. I think trying to look dirty is just a bad idea, flat-out.

What would you like to see more of in Lawrence: You know, the friendly and laid-back atmosphere in Lawrence has always impressed me. I hope we maintain such a welcoming and accepting environment in the present and future.

What would you like to see less of in Lawrence: Vests. I’m OK with sweater vests — pullovers that provide extra warmth for the body’s core — but shiny suit-vests and waistcoasts look out of place unless they are worn for the appropriate occasion.

Who are your fashion influences? I occasionally flip through GQ or Esquire. Also, I’ve always held an idealized image of the classic Oxford student in my mind. As a scholar, I guess I’ve always wanted to achieve such a classic look.

People say I look like: Michael Cera and Dr. Wilson, a character on the television series “House M.D.”

Tell us a secret: Sometimes I try to match the colors of my argyle socks to my shirt.
