Plans altered for presidential invitation

A plan to invite President Barack Obama to Lawrence as part of the state’s 150th anniversary is still alive, but altered.

About 25 people attended a meeting Monday to discuss the idea of the city hosting a presidential address in 2011, said Clenece Hills, a Lawrence teacher and historian who originally proposed the idea.

Hills said there was support for the idea, but the group suggested that Hills alter her plan of asking the president to come to Sesquicentennial Point near Clinton Lake for an outdoor event that would also coincide with the city’s 157th anniversary.

Instead, group members decided to explore indoor venues in Lawrence that could accommodate a presidential address, and agreed to invite the president to come anytime during 2011.

Hills said the group hopes to have a letter to present to the city and county commissions in about two weeks.

The year 2011 also marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, which group members believe may give Obama an added reason to come to Kansas.
