KDHE marks National Influenza Vaccination Week by encouraging H1N1 immunization

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius speaks Sunday, Jan. 10, to the congregation at the 19th Street Baptist Church in Washington to encourage them and all Americans to get the H1N1 flu vaccine and to kick of National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Get vaccinated against the H1N1 virus.

That was the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s message during a conference Monday to mark National Influenza Vaccination Week — Jan. 10-16.

SPECIAL COVERAGE

Most people who have been ill with the H1N1 influenza have recovered without medical treatment. However, some people have developed serious complications that require hospitalization. Twenty-six people have died in Kansas.

Data on how the H1N1 virus compares to other flu-like illnesses can be found on our new health Web site.

“There is now plenty of vaccine available, and it has been shown to be safe and effective,” said Dr. Jason Eberhart-Phillips, state health officer.

KDHE’s Kansas Immunization Program has facilitated the shipment of more than 855,000 doses of vaccine since Oct. 1 to health departments, health care providers and pharmacies across the state.

About 21,500 doses have been given in Douglas County.

And there’s still plenty to give away.

Residents can get their free H1N1 immunization at a clinic from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine.
