100 years ago: Eudora community declared ‘dry’

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 2, 1910: “Apparently no one drinks in Eudora where the German citizens thereabouts are known as total abstainers. Our county attorney and a deputy sheriff visited there yesterday and despite reports of heavy New Year’s drinking in some Eudora sectors, they found nothing and came back declaring the community ‘dry.’ … Last month was the coldest December here since 1872. Temperatures often ran 20 degrees or below and gas meters were often humming.”
