KU baseball wins

? Junior outfielder Brian Heere collected a pair of hits and saved a run with a diving catch in the fourth inning, and senior pitcher Brett Bollman scattered seven hits over 62/3 innings to earn his first win of the season as Kansas University’s baseball team edged Sacramento State, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The 25th-ranked Jayhawks improved to 2-1, while the Hornets evened their record at 2-2.

For the third consecutive game, KU received a strong starting pitching performance. Bollman held the Hornets to just one earned run on seven hits over 62/3 innings with a walk and three strikeouts. He mixed a cut fastball with a curve and a changeup to keep the Sacramento State hitters off-balance.

After allowing a run on two hits in the first, Bollman retired seven of the next eight hitters he faced.

Kansas relief pitchers Travis Blankenship and Brett Bochy held the Hornets scoreless over the final 21/3 innings.

KU will face Sacramento State and Gonzaga today.
