100 years ago: Small fire breaks out in the Innes store
From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 27, 1910: The boards of Douglas and Jefferson counties met today to discuss plans to work on bridges that both share. Nothing definite was done but more planning meetings have been set. . . . A Douglas County Fair Association meeting is planned to set up activities for this year’s fair and to elect officers. Last fall’s fair was considered the best ever held here and efforts will be made to top that this fall. . . .Because one of the boys who were sweeping out just had to smoke a cigarette this morning, the Innes store had a small fire when the cigarette ignited a preparation of oiled sawdust used to help clean the floors without too much dust. Fortunately, there were blankets handy to smother a fire that could have been disastrous. . . . It once was policy for local banks to cash all checks without charge. Now all is to be changed and those who do not have accounts at a given bank will face charges. It is called the Kansas City Rule since banks there have been doing this for some time.
