Veritas boys win; girls lose in state tourney

? Elijah Penny scored 27 points, and the Veritas Christian boys basketball defeated W.A.H.A., 49-37, on Thursday night in the first round of the KCAA state boys basketball tournament.

Veritas (13-10) will play the Wichita Defenders at 7 tonight in the semifinals.

“We played four good quarters against a good team,” Veritas coach Gary Hammer said. “They put on some half-court pressure in a trap situation, and we hit Elijah Penny on the baseline time after time after time.”

Ethan Scott scored 10 points for the Eagles, and Nate Scott and Thomas Bachert scored six points apiece.

On the girls side, Derby Christian downed Veritas Christian School, 41-21.

Kayli Farley scored nine points for Veritas.

Veritas will meet Flint Hills Christian at 2:30 p.m. today.
