Thursday nights under renovation

With four nights to go, Olympics coverage dominates the dial. But while viewers have been gazing at Vancouver, the Thursday-night schedule has undergone some renovations. As announced last week, the first season of “The Deep End” (7 p.m., ABC) concludes tonight with a big to-do about a charity function. Unless I’m very wrong, this will be the first and last season. Look for a repeat of “Grey’s Anatomy” in this slot next week. “Fast Forward” returns later in March.

As predicted earlier, and obvious to all, Fox finally pulled the plug on “Past Life” and will air an extra helping of “Kitchen Nightmares” (8 p.m., Fox) in its place. Tonight, chef Gordon Ramsay tries to breathe life into a change-resistant Italian restaurant in California.

The fire-breathing and award-winning chef is all over the dial tonight. Viewers can catch two helpings of the original British version of “Kitchen Nightmares” (7 p.m. and 8 p.m.) on BBC America. And look for Ramsay on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (10:30 p.m., ABC), too.

Of greater import for Fox, “American Idol” (7 p.m., Fox) will barge into the Thursday-night schedule to announce eliminations and survivors. Do they really need a whole hour? Of course not, but this allows Fox to broadcast its ratings champ, a show rival networks call “The Death Star,” on a third night.

The Thursday-night tweaking continues next week, when NBC moves its highly promoted series “The Marriage Ref” into the ill-fated Jay Leno slot.
