40 years ago: Tax ceiling likely to pass

Sheriff’s office cars patrolled the California-Santa Barbara campus though classes seemed to have returned to normal attendance after a night during which crowds of youg demonstrators set bonfires, bombed a patrol car and threw up streeet barricades while smashing bank windows.

It appeared Gov. Bob Docking’s tax increase ceiling of 5 percent would pass but staunch foes had not given up. State Sen. Bob Bennett was a leader in the charge to defeat the issue.
