Kansas House committee set to debate Thursday whether federal government has become too intrusive

? A Kansas House committee is taking up a states’ rights resolution declaring that the federal government has become too intrusive.

The Judiciary Committee plans a hearing Thursday afternoon on the nonbinding measure, which already has been adopted by the Senate.

The resolution declares that Kansas is claiming its sovereignty under the U.S. Constitution’s 10th Amendment. The amendment says powers not specifically granted to the federal government are reserved for states.

The resolution demands the repeal of federal laws compelling states to take certain actions or lose federal funds.

The measure is addressed to President Barack Obama, congressional leaders and members of Kansas’ congressional delegation.
