25 years ago: Texas man found guilty of attack on KU student

Sudden rain of more than 1.30 inches hit the city and more was due. However, there seemed to be no flash flooding threats of an immediate nature despite the fact the ground was saturated from previous heavy winter snows.

State Rep. John Solbach, D-Lawrence, was to go to Washington to speak on behalf of Kansas farmers. He was to appear before the Senate-House Economic Committee. Also making trips to D.C. on behalf of farm operators were State Rep. Robin Leach, D-Linwood, and State Sen. Jim Allen, R-Ottawa.

A county jury found a 22-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man guilty of the March 23 rape and kidnapping of a 22-year-old Kansas University student. The jury had spent three hours in deliberation. The defendant had fled to Texas and had to be extradited. Sentencing was set for later.

Retired school superintendent Carl Knox was to chair a steering committee to organize fund-raising and plan a new recreation center at Holcom Park.
