25 years ago: Alexander sentenced for murder of 80-year-old

President Reagan ordered the agriculture secretary to unilaterally implement measures to ease the farm credit crisis following filibustering Demcratic senators’ claims that the moves don’t go far enough. Farm-state Democrats said the admistration’s actions were progress and claimed Reagan would not have done anything without the pressure from the filibuster.

Donald E. Alexander, 19, was sentenced to life in pirison for the murder of an 80-year-old Lawrence woman. He had been convicted of first-degree murder, rape and aggravated burglary and also was sentenced to 15 years to life for rape and five years to 20 years on the burglary charge. The victim had been Marguerite Vinyard.

A county court judge found that county treasurer Ruth Vervynck had violated state statutes by denying a local woman access to county records. The judge was Ralph M. King Jr. The plaintiff was Gladys Wiltfong. Involved were auto lien records which Wiltfong said she needed in her work for a credit bureau.
