100 years ago: Salvation Army to demonstrate tobacco’s harm

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 22, 1910: The Salvation Army of Lawrence is going to have a demonstration about the harmful use of tobacco. There will be a chance to sign up with the Anti-Smoking League and special attention will be paid to getting young men to sign the pledge. so they will not acquire the smoking habit which can be harmful to one’s health. . . . Henry Bowman, a local contractor, tells of a recent experience when he dropped a valuable gold watch in a well where he was working in Ellis. A good diver, three times he plunged into the cold 14-foot water, finally recovering the watch. It took him a long time to recover but he had his watch. . . . The American Woman’s League held a formative meeting here last night with the goal of serving the interests of local womenn and helping those associated with the university. . . . A study is going on to determine if any state laws were broken when the young women working at the Kress store went out on strike because of low wages and company policies they disagreed with. A state inspector says if the tales the young women tell are correct, some laws have been broken and action will be taken.
