25 years ago: Patrolman retiring after 28 years of service

Sgt. Dale Heiserman was retiring after 28 years with the Kansas Highway Patrol. He originally was stationed at McPherson and transferred to Lawrence in 1963. He had held a number of major supervisory posts with the KHP during his career and planned to stay in Lawrence after retirement.

The nation’s economy had rebounded in the final three months of the past year (1984) at an even more vigorous pace than previously thought, the government announced. The gross national product had grown at a robust 4.9 percent from October through December.

T he resale prices for $8.50 tickets for the Kansas-Kansas State basketball game here had topped $15 and scalpers had enjoyed a field day outside soldout Allen Fieldhouse.

With empty beds to spare, Lawrence Memorial Hospital was trying to convert 10 of LMH’s “acute care” beds to a “skilled nursing facility.” There were ongoing efforts to boost the LMH income and make the operation more self-supporting.
