100 years ago: Baker president asking for year’s leave

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 21, 1910: Leaders of the Laymen’s Missionary Movement in Lawrence are planning on more than 100 to make the trip to Topeka tomorrow to attend the major state meeting of the group there. The movement seems to be gaining momentum in Kansas. . . . Tonight at Bowersock’s Opera House, the Elks will put on minstrel show which has been pronounced by those who have seen rehearsals to be one of the best things ever seen in Lawrence. . . . President Murlin of Baker University is asking for another year’s leave of absence for further study in Europe. He says he will not resign and would serve the year without pay. Murlin said he would abide by the decision of the Baker board of trustees but would like to return after another year in Berlin. . . . It appears the issues of the recent walkout by workers at the Kress store here are not settled and more action is likely by the unionized young women involved and their union. . . . The city council has reached an agreement on the taxing of telephone services here and both sides say the settlement is “fair enough.”
