February 19, 2010

The 6,000 classified employees at Kansas University, Fort Hays State, Pittsburg State and Wichita State supported making changes in Gov. John Carlin's pay plan for state workers. More than 100 attended a meeting on the issue in Topeka.

The U.S. Supreme Court, urged on by the Reagan administration, agreed to decide whether public high schools could allow students to meet during school hours for prayer and religious worship. Feelings ran high on both sides of the touchy issue triggered by a Pennsylvania high school case.

Local city commission candidates zeroed in on the need for local economic growth during a series of forums for voters. Officials said Lawrence needed to focus more on using the facilities and personnel at Kansas University help attract major “clean” business and industry.
