25 years ago: KU spring enrollment sets record

Spring enrollment at Kansas University set a record. Administrators said the official total was 25,437 on the Lawrence campus, off-campus centers and the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. The figure was 242 students above the previous mark, 25,195, the past spring. The headcount on the Lawrence campus was 20,568.

Retired Gen. William Westmoreland abandoned his $120 million libel suit against CBS over a documentary that accusd him of suppressing information on enemy troop strength during the Vietnam War, aborting an 18-week trial.

The state finance council voted to pay a $10,000 settlement to a Kansas University anthropology professor who sued a colleague and two graduate assistants for conspiracy to defame over a dispute which stemmed from a 1975 research project in the Central American nation of Belize. The suit had been brought by Michael Crawford.

State officials were reviewing a controversial KU policy governing removal of asbestos during a recent demolition project on the campus.
