Well-groomed skaters, dogs strut their stuff

Viewers immune to the charms of tonight’s Winter Olympics figure-skating competition (7 p.m., NBC) have plenty of sporting alternatives. Tamron Hall joins David Frei to host the 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (7 p.m., USA; 8 p.m., CNBC).

Hall, a veteran anchor for MSNBC and a “Today Show” regular, replaces Mario Lopez, who recently graduated from the kennel club to the beauty pageant, having hosted the recent Miss America Pageant on TLC.

An annual favorite, the Westminster Dog show is more venerable than both Miss America and the Winter games, having begun in 1877. Among American sporting traditions, only the Kentucky Derby has been around longer.

• Few figures in the history of sport have been as analyzed, celebrated and documented as boxer Muhammad Ali. The 2009 documentary “Facing Ali” (8 p.m., Spike) recalls his greatest bouts and interviews 10 of his surviving rivals, including George Chuvalo, Sir Henry Cooper, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks and Ernie Terrell. We also hear from his most bitter opponent — both in and out of the ring — Joe Frazier.

• Celebrities are just like you and me. Only more so. “Behind the Music” and “True Hollywood Story” have spawned a cottage industry of tell-alls and tell-more-than-we-want-to-knows about bold-faced names. Add “Celebrity Close Calls” (9 p.m., Bio) to the heap.

We learn that Erik Estrada had a near death/out-of-body experience after a botched “CHIPS” stunt sent him to the hospital. A bad injection gave Jane Seymour a similar white-light moment.

Rapper Coolio, who freely admits to gunplay as a youth, recalls a near-fatal asthma attack a block from his grandmother’s house. His anecdote unfolds more like a valuable public-service announcement than a spiritual recollection. He’s keenly aware that he escaped violent death many times only to nearly fall victim to the “stupidity” of not taking his chronic illness seriously.
